How Are Feminised Cannabis Seeds Made?
Feminised cannabis seeds - seeds without male chromosomes - are some of the most popular seeds on the market and are often sought after by collectors. Due to their status as premium seeds, there’s always an interest in where they come from and how they are developed.
What makes them so popular? Not only do they produce loads of cannabinoids, they are also far more space and resource efficient than other types of seeds. There is also an incredible amount of choice for buyers, choosing from top brands with decades of history, to newcomers and innovative breeding.
In this guide, we are going to go into detail about the benefits of choosing feminised cannabis seeds and how they are made, so you can make the right decision about whether feminised seeds are for you.

What are feminised cannabis seeds?
Feminised cannabis seeds are seeds which have been created by breeding two female cannabis plants together. In doing this, you remove the need for male plants, which can cause lower yields and seedy buds. With female seeds producing buds on every plant, your growing is far more efficient and less wasteful.
Regular seeds produce a 50/50 chance of producing a male and female plant, so many growers tend to choose female seeds versus regular seeds. Looks wise, you can’t tell the difference between a feminised seed to a non-feminised or regular seed - so in that sense they are indistinguishable.
How are feminised cannabis seeds made?
There are a few methods used to make feminised cannabis seeds, but there is generally one main way that most growers tend to use. Here is the typically approach to breeding feminised seeds:
- All known female plants are sprayed with colloidal silver daily during the first 3-4 weeks of flowering. As the treated plants develop, they will form male pollen sacs. The plants are continued to be sprayed daily until the pollen sacs have formed and are starting to split open.
- The pollen sacs are ready for harvest when they massively swell and start to really open up. Once they are ready, they are harvested by collecting the pollen sacs from the plant. These sacs are then left to dry for around a week. Once they are dried out, they are placed in a bag or storage box that can be sealed and shaken about to release all the pollen from the sacs and easily collect it.
- Following this, the pollen is now ready to be used to pollinate another female plant. A different female plant is chosen from those that were used to create the pollen. It’s best to choose a plant that has been flowering for 2-3 weeks as this increases the seed production. A brush is used to simply paint the feminised pollen onto the buds that have been chosen to pollinate. Either all buds are painted, or just a few, but bear in mind that only those that have been pollinated will produce seeds.
- It takes around 6 weeks for the feminised cannabis seeds to have fully developed and be ready for harvest. Again, the buds will have swelled and this is the sign that the seeds are ready for harvest. As soon as they’ve been harvested, the seeds are ready.
How does colloidal silver work?
The purpose of spraying the plant with colloidal silver is to make the female plant produce male pollen sacs to fertilise another female plant, removing the need for a male plant to be involved in the process. Colloidal silver achieves this by reducing levels of ethylene. It has become popular as it is quite easy to produce and is non-toxic.
Why choose feminised cannabis seeds?
There are many benefits to choosing feminised seeds over others such as regular seeds and autoflowering seeds. Although different varieties of cannabis seed come with their own benefits and it's down to your personal preference, here are some of the main reasons that growers tend to favour feminised seeds:
They save resources and space
When growing regular cannabis seeds, you have a 50/50 chance of getting a male or female plant. With the males creating lower quality cannabis and not able to produce anymore buds once grown, they take up valuable space.
With just feminised seeds, you don’t have to worry about growing males which can take the place of far more useful feminised plants. Most cannabis plants don’t express their sex until they start to mature, so after spending weeks nurturing the plants, you remove the frustration of growing a plant which will eventually have to be removed.
They’re very reliable
There isn’t just a small chance that you’ll get a female plant, it's 99% accurate that every plant that grows will be female. This is because the seeds only have female chromosomes, so this makes the process far more reliable and efficient. This streamlines the growing process, making the most out of your time and resources.
With the time it takes to determine the sex of the plants, monitor each individual one to ensure it’s not a male and if it is, remove it before they can polliante any female plants, having an almost 100% accurate method of producing female plants is a major benefit to most growers.
They produce better flavours
As female cannabis plants produce cannabinoid rich flowers and buds, you can expect far better flavours and effects. A lot of growers choose feminised cannabis seeds for this reason, as they not only are far more efficient, but their flavours are unrivalled by other types of seeds.
Do feminised cannabis seeds need any special attention?
Feminised cannabis seeds can be treated the same as any other seed when planted. They don’t require any special attention and don’t need as much monitoring as regular seeds.
As you already know they are female plants, you don’t have to go to the trouble of trying to sex the plants, remove any unwanted ones and continually monitor them to ensure there’s no cross pollination.
